The Michigan Veterinary Medical Association, with the support of Association Options, is recruiting and evaluating candidates for the position of a full-time Chief Executive Officer.

About the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association


The Michigan Veterinary Medical Association (MVMA) has advanced the standard of veterinary care statewide since 1883. MVMA, representing more than 2,300 members, monitors state legislation and regulations that pertain to veterinary medicine, produces programs to educate the public about veterinary medicine and animal health care, and keeps members current on state veterinary issues. The association also provides continuing education for veterinarians and related professionals. It serves as a resource for information on the practice of veterinary medicine to members and the public, including assistance with referrals.

CEO Position Description

This is a hands-on position which requires a candidate who is self-directed, motivated, growth-focused and results driven. The successful candidate will provide a variety of experiences and attributes to this mature, state veterinary organization including:

Leadership and Operations: Essential Responsibilities


The Chief Executive Officer will be a proven leader who is responsible for leading a team of five non-profit professionals to represent the members of the Association. The following are the essential responsibilities:


  • Implement the strategic goals of the MVMA set by the Board and keep the Board apprised of emerging issues facing the association.
  • Build and develop strong relationships with MVMA’s volunteer leaders, members, other external stakeholders and related organizations including the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine and other veterinary medical organizations.
  • Oversee daily operations of the organization and its relations with members, strategic partners, contractors, and employees.
  • Represent the association publicly at events and speak to members and stakeholders at industry conferences / events.
  • Assessing member needs and fulfilling the core purpose of the MVMA.
  • Lead continuous improvement for change opportunities and make recommendations to the Board.
  • Drive and ensure an inclusive and open team culture.
  • Lead and develop a team of association professionals that are mission-focused and outcomes oriented.
  • Work with the Treasurer, Finance Committee and staff to develop an annual operating budget
  • Work with member volunteers and other staff to assist in the planning, development, and execution of association membership growth strategies and programs.
  • Help ensure the association provides sound and relevant educational programming to its members and the veterinary profession as a whole through the Michigan Veterinary Conference (MIVETCON) and standalone programs and/or via electronic means.
  • Serve as a key representative for the association to members, strategic partners, and the Michigan legislative and administrative agencies as well as serving as conduit of information and provide cooperative efforts with regard to national issues pertaining to veterinary medicine.
  • Advocate for the association through our legislative efforts, lead our fundraising efforts with the Political Action Committee, and manage the programs of the Michigan Animal Health Foundation.
  • Travel to regional meetings and conferences as required.
  • Promote MVMA participation in AVMA, District VMA and local VMA programs and activities.




The CEO is committed to the purpose of the MVMA while demonstrating proven leadership experience. Other qualifications include:


  • 5-10 years of experience in non-profit management/leadership and management roles (CEO, COO, or director role.)
  • Proven track record of working successfully with association or other mission-driven organizations.
  • Passion for leading and developing strategic goals including growing revenue and organizational value. Please note that the organization had a tough year financially during covid and pivoted its event virtually – although now stabilized individual should have strong financial experience.
  • Business-mindset, including financial management, budget preparation and implementation, as well as forecasting.
  • Relationship building skills to cultivate and maintain engagement with members and volunteers.
  • Excellent presentation and public speaking skills.
  • Proficiency with common software applications and the use of technology.
  • An undergraduate degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
  • Knowledge of and experience working on current issues relevant to veterinary medicine is desirable.
  • Certified Association Executive designation is also preferred.
